NATO chiefs meet in Tirana

TIRANA, Sept. 18 - NATO has held a major conference over the weekend in the Albanian capital, bringing together military chiefs from across the alliance to Tirana.

General Petr Pavel, head of the NATO’s Military Committee, thanked Albania for hosting the event and for its contributions to NATO’s shared security.

He added Albania plays a valuable role in promoting co-operation and stability in the Western Balkans.

Prime Minister Edi Rama said during remarks made at the event that the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkans is the only way to achieve lasting security in this part of the European continent.

He added Albania will continue to contribute to NATO missions where it is needed. Albania’s government has said it will send more troops to Afghanistan in response to the appeals of the U.S. President for a new strategy on Afghanistan.

Attending defence chiefs discussed a number of concrete proposals on military contributions to support a comprehensive approach to threats.

The NATO Military Committee Conference by elected the next Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Chief of the British Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach. He will take office in the summer of 2018.

The current head of the Military Committee, Czech General Petr Pavel said took the opportunity to meet with President Ilir Meta and the Minister of Defence Olta Xhacka.
