TIRANA, July 20 – The Red-and-Black Alliance, a civic organization, has said that it will ask the Constitutional Court to rule on the legitimacy of a voting last week on the new census law. The Alliance says that two parliamentarians, who allegedly voted, have not even been in the country.
The Alliance is against including questions on ethnicity and the religion in the census, claiming they will urge many Albanians living in Greece to declare false data in order to maintain their Greek status.
The country’s census is expected to be held this autumn.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Sali Berisha strongly denounced the Alliance’s moves saying that is “false nationalism” and that Albanians were free to answer or not the questions.
He also urged the Interior Ministry to start preparations for the census.
