Crime rate declined in 2014, police chief says

Police say work showing good results, making country safer

TIRANA, Jan 27 – Albanian police achieved better results in 2014 than in previous years, according to the country’s top police official.

State Police Chief Artan Didi said police had met its priorities set a year ago and had achieved better results in getting near the policing standards of EU member countries.

Didi said there had been a stronger fight against organized crime, terrorism and corruption, increased investigative capacities and exchange of information with international partners.

Didi also mentioned some figures: 10.4 percent fewer murders, 7.7 percent fewer road accidents, 19.2 percent fewer crimes against persons, 54.1 percent less armed thefts, 15.3 percent less destruction of property by explosive devices when comparing 2014 to 2013.

He also talked about better results in the safety in the country and the respect of the human rights, better control of the border and prevention of the inter-border crime.

The top police official mentioned specifically some successful police operations like that in Lazarat against drug traffic and planting, to be followed with the one in Dukagjin, the Pope’s security during his visit to Tirana and also the national plan against drug planting, safety operations during the tourist season, destruction of illegal construction and participation in the fight against electricity theft.
